Broadway's biggest new hit, "Finding Neverland" is "a must-see you'll remember for years to come" ("Vogue"). Directed by visionary Tony winner Diane Paulus and based on the Academy Award-winning film starring Johnny Depp, "Finding Neverland" tells the incredible story behind one of the world's most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys' enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. See this magical production, which NPR called, "far and away the best musical of the year!", at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. [less-]

Don the Beachcomber is a piece of Southern California history -- a little slice of the South Pacific, right on the water in Huntington Beach. Built in 1937 by former bootlegger Ernest Gantt, Don the Beachcomber was one of America's first tiki bars, serving an exotic selection of tropical rum-based drinks to patrons who included the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Howard Hughes. To this day, the only thing more powerful than the drinks behind the bar are the performances on the three stages throughout the venue. With one of the most powerful books in musical theater history and immortal songs like "If I Loved You," "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," it's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created together, "Carousel" was Rodgers and Hammerstein's personal favorite. It's the poignant and heartbreaking story of swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow, who captivates the naive millworker Julie. As luck would have it, just as they learn that Julie's pregnant, Billy loses his job -- and gets involved in a bank robbery to make ends meet. Things go horribly awry, but years later Billy gets the chance to see his wife and the daughter he never knew. How Billy instills in both his child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. Experience for yourself the show "Time" magazine dubbed the "Best Musical of the 20th Century" when "Carousel" hits Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. [less-]

Nearly 20 years ago, NPR's "Morning Edition" declared: "It's not easy to categorize the music of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, except that it's hot." The Chapel Hill-based band had an instant hit on their hands when their 1996 single "Hell" took over the airwaves, heralding that decade's swing revival. They went on to carve their own niche with a sound that blended klezmer, hot club jazz and Delta blues fit for both college radio and mainstream audiences. Headed up by bandleader Jimbo Mathus and founding member Chris Phillips on drums, the band is back at again, celebrating the recent release of their re-mastered chart-topping album "Hot". They'll take the stage at the City National Grove of Anaheim, reviving their signature misfit retro-swing sound. [less-]

In October 1998, a 21 year-old student was kidnapped, beaten and left tied to a fence in a prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, battered body was discovered the next day, but he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard and he was targeted for being gay. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie to conduct more than 200 interviews and follow the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. Kaufman interviewed those directly connected to the case as well as citizens of the town, finding an incredible breadth of reactions that were both unsettling and fascinating. "The Laramie Project" at Westminster Community Playhouse is a breathtaking collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. [less-]
